Forty-nine Burmese still in central jail

30 January 2010: Forty nine Burmese nationals are still facing charges of committing a robbery on January 18 in Aizawl city, Mizoram, a northeast state of India.

According to a source, they were produced before the Judicial Magistrate-cum-Senior Civil Judge, in the Vanlalchami Court on January 23. While 35 were granted bail 14 were denied it.

However, the 35 arrested Burmese granted bail, cannot afford to give Rs. 500 and the recommendation from the lowest rung employees of the government. So they have to appear in court again on February 4. Meanwhile the 14 are still under arrest under the Foreigners Act. Although the court tried to deport them to Burma, they have requested to be put in Aizawl central jail instead of being pushed back to Burma.

The Burmese have been accused and arrested for robbing Mawitei of Rs. 3 lakhs and a mobile phone on January 20 in Aizawl. But policemen are still looking for the right persons.
